SAROJ SAWHNEY
B. Arch [Roorkee]
Architect

Saroj Sawhney grew up in the mining area around Asansol, West Bengal. The haphazard planning of the built environment (around the stately steel structure of the mines) prompted her to delve into the field of architecture and how best to improve the built environment. The key to planning became ‘openness with compactness’. Her thesis aptly emphasized this aspect in the Master Plan for an existing mining area.

After completing Bachelor of Architecture from Roorkee, she worked with Charles Correa in Mumbai. She joined Jasbir Sawhney & Associates as a Partner and as a Managing Director of Sawhney Consultants Pvt. Ltd. Amongst her works jointly with Jasbir Sawhney & Associates, there was a strong emphasis on open plan, natural light with outdoor and indoor spaces.

While at Roorkee, she was awarded the General Proficiency Prize.

She is a member of the Council of Architecture and Indian Institute of Architects. She was on the jury for Inside Outside Architecture + Design Foundation.

Her hobbies today include nature photography, music classical Indian and Western and Jazz, organic farming and sustainable design forms.
