The Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital is contemporary hospital providing a soothing environment for the patient with the use of colour and natural light incorporated in its design. The hospital has been designed to minimize the staff requirements, optimizing the location of facilities and their efficient functioning. The roof slopes are designed with a system to conserve rain water, which is very crucial in this context.

CONTEMPORARY HOSPITAL DESIGN

Hospital design has seen a shift on the approach to the way it responds to the user and the patient. Traditionally hospitals projected a clinical forbidding look to the patient, wherein efficiency in planning and services were the only criteria. Recently the scenario has changed, and the idea is to provide a much warmer and friendly environment for the patient, ambulatory and inpatient services. One has also seen the use of colour, greater emphasis on natural light, atriums, landscape in the public spaces which relate to the local climate and traditional forms of architecture.
